Juan García‑Herreros
Self‑taught virtuoso, composer, and cultural bridge‑builder
Early Roots - From Darkness to Light
Born in the war‑torn highlands of Colombia, Juan grew up amid displacement and scarcity. In 1986 his family fled the violence of the Cartels and arrived as refugees in NewYork City. Money was scarce, but the fire inside him burned brighter. By night he slipped into an empty high‑school classroom, hidden from the world, and practiced on a battered, borrowed bass until his fingers bled. Those secret sessions forged a discipline that turned poverty into purpose and set the stage for a life devoted to music, spirituality, and storytelling.
The Birth of “Snow Owl”
The name Snow Owl was bestowed upon him by the Arhuaco elders of the Sierra Nevada, a sacred title that connects him forever to his ancestral roots and the wisdom of the mountains. At the age of sixteen Juan entered the Berklee Scholarship Tour Competition in New Orleans. His performance earned him a scholarship to Berklee College of Music - an honor that marked the first official recognition of his talent.
Musical Mastery
• Instruments: Master of every type of electric bass, acoustic double bass, and a growing collection of rare ethnic stringed instruments that he weaves into cinematic soundscapes.
• Genres: From World Music to orchestral film scores, from video‑game ambience to avant‑garde experimental works.
• Signature Sound: A blend of deep, resonant bass tones with the mystic timbres of indigenous instruments, creating a sonic language that feels both ancient and unmistakably modern.

Totem Warriors - A Creative Collective
In 2020 Juan founded Totem Warriors, a multidisciplinary sound collective dedicated to scoring video games, films, and immersive experiences. The group’s ethos mirrors Juan’s own journey: honoring heritage, pushing technological boundaries, and inviting listeners into a shared spiritual narrative.
Inspiring the Next Generation
Juan’s narrative - from a child practicing in a dimly lit classroom to a globally recognized artist sharing stages with the world’s most celebrated composers - serves as a living testament that dreams, when nurtured with relentless dedication, can transcend circumstance. He frequently mentors emerging musicians, emphasizing:
“Your background is not a limitation; it is the foundation of your unique sound.
Let the darkness that once hid you become the light that guides others.”
“Snow Owl” continues to turn the resonance of his creations into a conduit for cultural memory, spiritual depth, and modern innovation - inviting every listener to find their own flight in the night sky.
