Höhepunkt des Bernstein-Jahres

Der Name Leonard Bernsteins wird oft beschworen, wenn von der Versöhnung zwischen U- und E-Musik die Rede ist, zwischen Unterhaltungs- und Ernster Musik. Zum einen hatte Bernstein ein Ohr für "gute Musik" in allen stilistischen Lagern; zum anderen gibt es auch in seinem Schaffen Kompositionen aus beiden Sphären. Und doch ist er nur in einem einzigen Werk den gesamten stilistischen Radius abgeschritten, nur einmal hat er Schlager und Sinfonik, Broadway und Polytonalität geschwisterlich nebeneinander gestellt: in "Mass", dem großen abendfüllenden Werk, mit dem das RSO Wien unter seinem Ex-Chefdirigenten Dennis Russell Davies den Höhepunkt im Bernstein-Jahr 2018 ansteuert. "Mass" wurde auf Bitten von Jacqueline Kennedy komponiert und 1971 zur Eröffnung des John F. Kennedy Center For The Performing Arts in Washington unter großem Jubel uraufgeführt – auch wenn das Missverständnis im Raum blieb, Bernstein habe seine Version einer Messe komponiert. Dieser Eindruck sei falsch, konterte der Komponist: ",Mass‘ ist keine Messe. Es ist ein Theaterstück mit dem Titel ,Mass‘." Für die Theatralisierung des lateinischen Messtextes, der von den "Klassikern" auf der Bühne realisiert wird – RSO Wien und Wiener Singakademie –, sorgen die kritischen Reaktionen der Gemeinde, bestehend aus Street Band und Street Choir (Company of Music), die den Celebrant allmählich zum Zweifeln bringen. In einem kurzen Moment der totalen Stille beschwört Bernstein die Krise des Glaubens: "Ein Moment, in dem jeder versucht, sich selbst zu verstehen, und in seine eigene Seele blickt, um herauszufinden, was dort zerstört wurde. Kurzum: Jeder versucht, das Heilige wiederzufinden, das ihn emporheben könnte, das Wesentliche, das uns erst zu Menschen macht." "Mass" gehört zu den großen Herausforderungen im Konzertsaal. Das Orchester ist durch Jazz-Instrumente – E- und Bassgitarre, Keyboards, Drumset, Saxofone – ergänzt und muss sich immer wieder auf neue Ausdrucksmittel einstellen. Dem Celebrant, gesungen hier von dem tschechischen Bariton Vojtěch Dyk, stehen gleich drei Chöre zur Seite: die Wiener Singakademie, der Kinderchor der Wiener Staatsoper und die Company of Music, aus deren Reihen auch mehrere Rock- und Bluessoli besetzt werden.
